    Analysis and Design of CMOS Radio-Frequency Power Amplifiers

    The continuous advancement of semiconductor technologies, especially CMOS technology, has enabled exponential growth of the wireless communication industry. This explosive growth in turn has completely changed people’s lives. The CMOS feature size scale down greatly benefits digital logic integrations, which result in more powerful, versatile, and economical digital signal processing. Further research and development has pushed analog, mixed-signal, and even radio-frequency (RF) circuit blocks to be implemented and integrated in CMOS. Future generations of wireless communication call for even further level of integration, and as of now, the only circuit block that is rarely integrated in CMOS along with other parts of the system is the power amplifier (PA). Due to the fact that the PA in a wireless communication system is the most power-hungry circuit block, the integration of RF PA in CMOS would potentially not only save the cost of the wireless communication system real estate, but also reduce power consumption since die-to-die connection loss can be eliminated. RF PA design involves handling large amounts of voltage and current at the radio frequencies, which in the present wireless communication standards are in the range of giga-hertz. Therefore, a good understanding of many aspects related to RF PA design is necessary. Theoretical analysis of the communication system, nonlinear effects of the PA, as well as the impedance matching network is systematically presented. The analysis of the nonlinear effects proposes a formal mathematical description of the multitone nonlinearity, and through its relationship with two-tone test, the proposed PA design methodology would greatly reduce the design time while improving the design accuracy. A thorough analysis of the available architecture and design techniques for efficiency and linearity enhancement of RF PA shows that despite tremendous amounts of research and development into this topic, the fundamental tradeoff between the two still limits the RF PA implementation largely within SiGe, GaAs, and InP technologies. A RF PA for Wideband Code-Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) application standard is proposed, designed, and implemented in CMOS that demonstrates the proposed segmentation technique that resolved the main tradeoff between power efficiency and linearity. The innovative architecture developed in this work is not limited to applications in the WCDMA communication protocol or the CMOS technology, although CMOS implementation would take advantage of the readily available digital resources

    Probability of ruin in discrete insurance risk model with dependent Pareto claims

    Abstract We present basic properties and discuss potential insurance applications of a new class of probability distributions on positive integers with power law tails. The distributions in this class are zero-inflated discrete counterparts of the Pareto distribution. In particular, we obtain the probability of ruin in the compound binomial risk model where the claims are zero-inflated discrete Pareto distributed and correlated by mixture.</jats:p

    The significance of wrist immobilization for endoscopic carpal tunnel release

    BackgroundOver the years, endoscopic carpal tunnel release (ECTR) has gained significant interest as an alternative to surgery. However, no consensus has been reached on the necessity of postoperative wrist immobilization. This study aims to compare the outcomes of wrist immobilization for a period of 2 weeks to immediate wrist mobilization after ECTR.MethodsA total of 24 patients with idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome undergoing dual-portal ECTR from May 2020 to Feb 2022 were enrolled and randomly divided into two groups postoperatively. In one group, patients wore a wrist splint for 2 weeks. In another group, wrist mobilization was allowed immediately after surgery. The two-point discrimination test (2PD test); the Semmes–Weinstein monofilament test (SWM test); the occurrence of pillar pain, digital and wrist range of motion (ROM); grip and pinch strength; the visual analog score (VAS), the Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire (BCTQ) score; the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) score; and complications were evaluated at 2 weeks and 1, 2, 3, and 6 months after the surgery.ResultsAll 24 subjects finished this study with no dropouts. During the early follow-up, patients with wrist immobilization demonstrated lower VAS scores, lower occurrence of pillar pain, and higher grip and pinch strength compared with the immediate mobilization group. No significant difference was obtained between these two groups in terms of the 2PD test, the SWM test, digital and wrist ROM, BCTQ, and the DASH score. In total, two patients without splints reported transient scar discomfort. No one complained of neurapraxia, injury of the flexor tendon, median nerve, and major artery. At the final follow-up, no significant difference was found in any parameters between both groups. The local scar discomfort mentioned above disappeared and left no serious sequela.ConclusionWrist immobilization during the early postoperative period demonstrated significant pain alleviation along with stronger grip and pinch strength. However, wrist immobilization yielded no obvious superiority regarding clinical outcomes at the final follow-up

    Antitumor Effects of Berberine on Gliomas via Inactivation of Caspase-1-Mediated IL-1β and IL-18 Release

    Gliomas arise in the glial cells of the brain or spine and are the most prevalent and devastating type of brain tumors. Studies of tumor immunology have established the importance of the tumor micro-environment as a driver of oncogenesis. Inflammatory mediators such as IL-1β and IL-18 released by monocytes regulate transcriptional networks that are required for malignant cell growth. Berberine is a natural botanical alkaloid that is widely found in the Berberis species. Although it has been widely used as an anti-diarrheal treatment in North America for several decades, our study is the first to investigate berberine as an anti-tumor agent in glioma cells. In this study, we demonstrate that berberine significantly inhibits inflammatory cytokine Caspase-1 activation via ERK1/2 signaling and subsequent production of IL-1β and IL-18 by glioma cells. Moreover, we found that berberine treatment led to decreased motility and subsequently cell death in U251 and U87 cells. In addition, our study is the first to indicate that berberine can reverse the process of epithelial-mesenchymal transition, a marker of tumor invasion. Taken together, our work supports berberine as a putative anti-tumor agent targeting glioma cells

    Uncertainty-inspired Open Set Learning for Retinal Anomaly Identification

    Failure to recognize samples from the classes unseen during training is a major limit of artificial intelligence (AI) in real-world implementation of retinal anomaly classification. To resolve this obstacle, we propose an uncertainty-inspired open-set (UIOS) model which was trained with fundus images of 9 common retinal conditions. Besides the probability of each category, UIOS also calculates an uncertainty score to express its confidence. Our UIOS model with thresholding strategy achieved an F1 score of 99.55%, 97.01% and 91.91% for the internal testing set, external testing set and non-typical testing set, respectively, compared to the F1 score of 92.20%, 80.69% and 64.74% by the standard AI model. Furthermore, UIOS correctly predicted high uncertainty scores, which prompted the need for a manual check, in the datasets of rare retinal diseases, low-quality fundus images, and non-fundus images. This work provides a robust method for real-world screening of retinal anomalies

    Focused wave interactions with floating structures: A blind comparative study

    The paper presents results from the Collaborative Computational Project in Wave Structure Interaction (CCP-WSI) Blind Test Series 2. Without prior access to the physical data, participants, with numerical methods ranging from low-fidelity linear models to fully non-linear Navier−Stokes (NS) solvers, simulate the interaction between focused wave events and two separate, taut-moored, floating structures: a hemispherical-bottomed cylinder and a cylinder with a moonpool. The ‘blind’ numerical predictions for heave, surge, pitch and mooring load, are compared against physical measurements. Dynamic time warping is used to quantify the predictive capability of participating methods. In general, NS solvers and hybrid methods give more accurate predictions; however, heave amplitude is predicted reasonably well by all methods; and a WEC-Sim implementation, with CFD-informed viscous terms, demonstrates comparable predictive capability to even the stronger NS solvers. Large variations in the solutions are observed (even among similar methods), highlighting a need for standardisation in the numerical modelling of WSI problems

    Single cell atlas for 11 non-model mammals, reptiles and birds.

    The availability of viral entry factors is a prerequisite for the cross-species transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Large-scale single-cell screening of animal cells could reveal the expression patterns of viral entry genes in different hosts. However, such exploration for SARS-CoV-2 remains limited. Here, we perform single-nucleus RNA sequencing for 11 non-model species, including pets (cat, dog, hamster, and lizard), livestock (goat and rabbit), poultry (duck and pigeon), and wildlife (pangolin, tiger, and deer), and investigated the co-expression of ACE2 and TMPRSS2. Furthermore, cross-species analysis of the lung cell atlas of the studied mammals, reptiles, and birds reveals core developmental programs, critical connectomes, and conserved regulatory circuits among these evolutionarily distant species. Overall, our work provides a compendium of gene expression profiles for non-model animals, which could be employed to identify potential SARS-CoV-2 target cells and putative zoonotic reservoirs
